Frequently Asked Questions

Using Super Spacer

Can the Super Spacer product be customized?
You have a broad range of possibilities available with Super Spacer and Edgetech custom window spacer solutions. Custom spacer products are available in silicone only and can be configured as traditional-sized Super Spacer Premium Plus, Premium and Cushion Edge products.

What colors are available? What is the minimum order?
The standard Super Spacer color is a charcoal grey. Premium Plus and Premium colors are a warm grey and black. Additional colors (almond, white and aluminum grey) are available with a minimum order of 5,000 ft. per size. Other custom options are available with large orders of over 50,000 ft. per shipment.

Is the adhesive really strong enough to be a structural seal?
Super Spacer's acrylic-based adhesive and patented reverse dual seal technology exceed all industry standards and help deliver optimal structural integrity, including:

  • high wind load resistance
  • excellent glazing pressure resistance
  • great resistance to shear stress and spacer displacement.

Can silicone be used as the secondary seal?
Silicone sealants are not recommended for use with Standard, Premium and Premium Plus products.

What secondary sealants are recommended for use?
Please review our Technical Bulletin regarding compatible Insulating Glass Sealant Types for use with Super Spacer. (.pdf 69 KB)

Edgetech's Super U™ fills the need for a rigid, highly insulating sealed unit spacer. For more information, see the Super U product information sheet.

What's the maximum size for a unit made with Super Spacer?
Edgetech has no data for the maximum size for a unit, but we do have customers who have made units as large as 60 sq. ft.

Can Super Spacer be used in sky rises?
Besides residential glazing, Super Spacer has also been used in commercial projects to provide comfort and window condensation protection. The list of commercial applications of Super Spacer includes hospitals, laboratories, store and restaurant windows, swimming pools, refrigeration glass, skylights and atriums.

Following is a list of some commercial projects successfully completed using Super Spacer:

  • Modern Art Museum - Stockholm
  • Peace Tower - Ottawa, Canada
  • San Diego Mormon Temple - San Diego
  • Cape Breton Regional Hospital - Sidney, Nova Scotia
  • Royal Alexandra Hospital - Edmonton, Canada (sloped glazing)

Edgetech is in the process of developing a spacer system for structural glazing. At this point, we do not recommend the use of Super Spacer for two-sided and four-sided structural glazing.

How large of a unit can Super Spacer support?
Units as large as 30 sq. ft. can be made with Super Spacer Premium/Premium Plus. This spacer product line should be selected for any of the following cases:

  • When fabricating insulating glass units that utilize sheets of glass greater than 6 mm (1/4") in thickness.
  • When the insulating glass is greater than 30 sq. ft. in area.
  • When installation is above four stories in height.

How much desiccant is in a foot of Super Spacer?
Super Spacer S-class is at least 40% by weight 3A molecular sieve desiccant powder with a small percent of silica gel to absorb volatiles.

Super Spacer E-class is at least 40% by weight 3A molecular sieve desiccant powder.

For Premium Plus, Premium and Standard Super Spacer:

Size
Amount of desiccant (g/ft)
3/16" x 1/4"
> 3.3
3/16" x 1/2"
> 6.5
3/16" x 3/4"
> 9.8

Do you need to edge-delete when using glass with a Low-E soft coating?
Super Spacer has the capability to bond with most types of glass surfaces. In fact, it has the ability to stick to all tested Low-E coated surfaces to date. For edge-deletion when using soft coat Low-E glass, the IG manufacturers should follow instructions given by the Low-E supplier. If the Low-e supplier requires the IG manufacturer to edge-delete for the sealant, then Edgetech recommends edge-deletion where the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive bonds to the glass surface.

A larger issue for the IG manufacturer is whether or not the IG sealant behind a Super Spacer® product will bond to the Low-E surfaces for the life of an IG Unit. The IG unit manufacturer must consult the sealant supplier to check the compatibility of the sealant with the glass in question. The glass manufacturer must also be consulted to assure that the bond of the Low-E coating to the glass will remain unaffected by the sealant in question.
